Families and community members from across District 102 gathered on January 28 as the district, in partnership with Hold the Phone, launched its 2026 Tech Education Series with an evening discussion centered on technology, screen use, and supporting children’s digital wellbeing.
The series kicked off with Emily Cherkin, M.Ed., a nationally recognized Screentime Consultant and leading voice in digital wellbeing. Cherkin has been featured in major national and international media outlets, including The New York Times, The Washington Post, Good Morning America, The Today Show, the BBC, and NPR.
Currently an associate professor at the University of Washington, Cherkin is also the author of the best-selling book, The Screentime Solution: A Judgment-Free Guide to Becoming a Tech-Intentional Family. Drawing from her experience as a former middle school teacher and as a parent of two teenagers, Cherkin brought both professional expertise and personal insight to the conversation, resonating strongly with families in attendance.
During the presentation, Cherkin shared research-based strategies and practical tools to help parents and caregivers become more “tech-intentional” in an increasingly digital world. She emphasized reducing conflict around screen use, fostering healthier relationships with technology, and supporting children’s overall well-being—without judgment or guilt.
Cherkin’s visit came on the heels of her recent testimony before the U.S. Senate and the British Parliament, underscoring her role as an internationally recognized expert on the impact of technology on children and adolescents.
Families who were unable to attend—or who would like to revisit the discussion—can access additional resources, including Emily Cherkin’s presentation, handout, and a video recording of the event.

The Tech Education Series will continue throughout 2026, offering additional opportunities for families to learn, reflect, and engage around technology and digital citizenship. Those with questions or who are interested in supporting future events are encouraged to contact Hold the Phone at info@parentsforholdthephone.org.
District 102 thanks Hold the Phone, Emily Cherkin, and all participating families for helping make the first event of the series a meaningful and impactful start.
