Superintendent's Message

March certainly came in like a lamb this year.  The first weekend in March gave us a glimpse of the spring and summer to come and gave us reason to hope!  On the flip side, we have witnessed the atrocities happening to the Ukrainian people along with the humanitarian efforts to help families who are trying to survive in their country or escape. It can help us with perspective on many of our own daily experiences.

We all seek to return to normalcy in our world.  This can be defined in many different ways for many different people. While we are seeing that “return” in some of our daily routines, we need to be reminded that the last couple of years has had an impact on our students and teachers (and, yes, our parents and communities).  We continue to live in a world where we are witnessing events that most have never experienced before.  More than ever, our children need stability and boundaries for existing in a world where previously established behavioral and social norms appear to be evaporating.  Sometimes the dissolution of certain norms is appropriate and acceptable.  In other areas, it can cause confusion and anxiety for our young people as they try to navigate in a world where they witness inappropriate activities celebrated and encouraged on social media platforms.

As a community, our students need us as much, if not more, than they ever did.  They need to know there are boundaries and expectations.  They need to know that we have their back, even if they don’t act like they want that right now.  They need to know that discipline of mind and body is important in every aspect of their life.  Witnessing the world events of the last 3-5 years through the immediacy and unfiltered lens of technology can be very positive, but it can also produce a great deal of anxiety for those who have not attained the maturity or responsibility to handle this influx of sound bytes and images.

As a district, I am proud of our teachers and students for all they have accomplished over the last two years during this pandemic.  As we begin to see a glimmer of light that “normalcy” may return, please continue to help us in educating our students, your children, through the challenges that they will continue to face.  Continue to help them develop and hone their social skills, demonstrating respect even through disagreements, respect for personal space and property, and respect for those around them-peers and teachers, and staff.

Our children deserve boundless opportunities within age-appropriate boundaries in and out of school.  Thank you for continuing to work with us as we all work together to educate our children for their future!

Kindness is Contagious:

Plunging for the Mighty Patriots

Slider is playing
MP1

Students from La Grange School District 102 gathered over the weekend of March 5th, for a fundraiser event coordinated by the Cossitt PTC. Plunging for the Mighty Patriots (modeled after the Chicago Polar Plunge) which raised money in support of Park Junior High’s Special Olympics basketball team, The Mighty Patriots. First time in the team’s history, the Mighty Patriots have qualified for the State Special Olympics basketball competition hosted in Bloomington, Illinois at Illinois State University.

The team started 16 years ago when a student in the Special Education program didn’t think he would make the basketball team. Geri Pasieka and another staff member took the initiative in creating the school’s own Special Olympics Basketball team. Since then, the team has grown and support for the team has grown immensely.

The Mighty Patriots’ current staff sponsors, Geri Pasieka and Christy Schwartz are overwhelmed by all the support they have received this year, especially from other students. All the hard work and effort by the team has had a successful outcome. This season the team has played 13 games and are been undefeated.

“Our very favorite part happens at midseason when the team starts to gel,” said Pasieka and Schwartz. “That is when players start helping each other and trusting each other to pass the ball. It is great seeing them worry about another teammate making a shot during the game rather than just watching the score. It is rewarding to see the student coaches motivating the players and keeping them focused. Also, listening to the players chatter on the bench like any other team is exciting. It is inspiring to watch the student body in the stands accept and cheer for their team and see how the players shine. The acceptance is definitely our favorite part!”

“It is so wonderful watching the sportsmanship and kindness this team shows to others,” said Schwartz. “If an opponent falls during a game, it is a Mighty Patriot stopping to help them up. Our players make sure all teammates have a chance to score and if they don’t, they will give them the ball and hold off the competition to give them a chance.  These kids play with their hearts.”

The Cossitt PTC was able to raise over $3,000 during the Plunging for the Mighty Patriots Fundraiser to help support the Mighty Patriots. Prizes throughout the event were generously sponsored by The Hot Dog and Burger Company, Nonna's Pizza, and Flying High Gym.

“What a way to advance to the state competition with the knowledge that so many are in support of our team,” said Geri Pasieka. “ I am speechless - which hardly ever happens! Thank you to everyone who offered their heart, energy, love, support, and donations to help. You have made this team and its coaches feel honored, supported, and loved. What more could anyone ask for?”

The Mighty Patriots experience is a demonstration of overcoming challenges, uniting the student body, and demonstrating the heart of the La Grange D102’s school community. It is always amazing to see how MIGHTY, whether in winning or losing, these Patriots can be!

Park Jr. High is hosting another event Thursday, March 10, for the Mighty Patriots where the entire school lined up throughout the hallways to celebrate and clap as the team headed out for the State Competition. The entire La Grange D102 community wishes them the best of luck!

LT COMMUNITY CONVERSATION: TALKING TO STUDENTS ABOUT ELIMINATING HATE WITH DR. TYRONE HOWARD

Lyons Township High School District #204 is excited to host a special virtual community conversation led by Dr. Tyrone Howard. This conversation will be designed to provide parents and caregivers with tools, strategies, and resources that can be used in working with students around eliminating hate and hate language. We also encourage students to attend and be a part of this discussion. Many students learn behaviors and language from multiple sources such as social media and peers that are not always conducive for a healthy and inclusive learning environment.  Dr. Howard will share how parents and caregivers can respond to inappropriate comments about race, gender, religion, sexual orientations, and other social identities. Ultimately, this community conversation will focus on how we can work together to cultivate a caring community for all.

referral gps

Referral GPS - Connecting People to Treatment:  We are committed to creating a culture of well-being for students, staff,  parents, and the community. In an effort to continuously support this commitment, the district has entered an agreement with ReferralGPS.

ReferralGPS is a web-based service focused on assisting our students,  staff, and community in finding local mental-health and substance use-related treatment. The service compliments the districts existing systems of support as a tool for student service teams and families to connect with treatment. Along with a searchable database of treatment options, ReferralGPS provides Care Navigation to assist families in triage, appointment setting, and follow-up care.

School families may access ReferralGPS in two ways:

1) Visit this link at https://referralgps.com/find-help/dist102 to search for treatment resources or connect with a Care  Navigator anonymously.

2) Contact Student Services (social workers, psychologists,  counselors) to seek out treatment options.

ReferralGPS takes into account all types of private and public insurance including PPO, HMO, Medicaid, Medicare, and families who are uninsured or underinsured. The platform also filters by age, gender, zip code, and special requests.

ReferralGPS is available for use by district students, staff, and families at no cost. All information entered on the ReferralGPS tool is completely confidential and securely stored.
